A riddle is the cheapest reading practice there is: three short lines, every word one the classes have already taught, and a thing at the end of them. Read it aloud before you guess. The hints are there if you want them, and they cost nothing but the mark.

Twenty-one of these were written for this school out of the words it teaches; three are from the tradition, and those are marked. If a word in a riddle is new to you, it is in the lexicon. For longer reading, the graded reader is next door.
